Soup Filling & Lidding Lines - February 08th 2012
An excellent reputation for supplying high-quality depositors to the food production industry has secured Riggs Autopack a recent order from Rod and Ben’s, one of the UK’s highly respected manufacturers of award-winning organic soup.
Rod and Ben’s ethos has always been that the best soups should include the finest ingredients, and consequently they use only vegetables grown on their Bickham Farm in Devon in accordance with a strict organic code. They ensure that all recipes are made in small, manageable batches so that the ingredient’s integrity, colour, flavour and texture are preserved at all times.
Rod and Ben’s soups have won high praise and many awards over the years; they firmly believe that with a little extra thought and care, a good soup can be encouraged to be a great soup. This is precisely why they only work on substantial soups that offer rich, natural colours and intense, dense textures.

Over the years, the business has gone from strength to strength. As manufacturing has increased, the company has kept pace with demand by moving away from manual filling to a more automated form of depositing their soup ingredients. As their soup contains fresh, natural ingredients, it was imperative that any automatic depositing that was to be introduced into production, had to be highly accurate, damage-free, and provide superior weight control.
Subsequently, it was vital that when purchasing a volumetric filling and lidding production line they chose an industry respected supplier that could provide equipment to meet their stringent production demands.
Lancashire-based Riggs Autopack Ltd design and build high-quality depositors and bespoke conveyor filling lines for the food production industry. Offering hygienic depositing with outstanding accuracy, weight control and damage-free product handling, Riggs Autopack's Model 1000 depositors are designed to dispense a vast range of hot or cold food products including soup with large, fragile particulates.
During the first meeting at Rod and Ben’s Devon farm, Riggs Autopack were able to advise on appropriate machinery to enhance production. Following successful machine trials, they placed an order with Riggs for a fully automatic conveyor filling and lid press line. This included:
- A Model 1000 vertical transfer pump connected to an existing on-site steam cooker
- This fed hot finished soup products direct from the cooker to the hopper of a Model 1000 low level twin head depositor. The depositor hopper was designed with a damage free paddle agitation system to hold soup particulates in suspension
- 3 metre slat conveyor with container sensors, gating system and adjustable guide rails
- Height adjustable lid press unit for tamper evident lids
- Rotary out-feed table

The filling line was recently installed on the farm and is being used to deposit Vegetable Balti and Three Bean Vegetable Chilli into 300gm single portion plastic pots, and particulate soup into 600gm plastic pots, 1 litre bottles, and 5 litre buckets.

It is fulfilling all manufacturing demands; production levels have dramatically increased saving the company valuable production time and money. Rod and Ben’s owner Rod Hall is delighted with the machine. He commented: ‘‘Following extensive research of who and what was available, it was clear that Riggs Autopack offered us a significant step forward. They understood our production needs and have now provided us with a cost-effective and highly versatile machine solution."
“The equipment is easy to use with impressive change over times, ideal for coping with our level of production. The depositing accuracy is excellent and we have been thoroughly impressed with the level of service received from their staff. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others.”
